ADHD, the Right Brain, and Why Balance Matters

When we talk about ADHD, sensory challenges, or even autism tendencies, one of the big players in the brain is something called brain balance.

The brain has two sides—left and right. Ideally, they work together like teammates, passing the ball back and forth. But sometimes, one side isn’t firing as strongly as the other. For many kids we see here at Apex Chiropractic, it’s the right side that often needs extra support.

What the Right Brain Does

The right side of the brain is the “big picture” processor. It helps kids with things like:

  • Reading body language and social cues

  • Calming emotions

  • Paying attention to the whole room at once

  • Organizing sensory input

When the right brain is underactive, the left brain (which is detail-oriented, logical, and “go-go-go”) can take over. That can look like:

  • Racing thoughts

  • Trouble sitting still

  • Hyper-focus on tiny details while missing the big picture

  • Sensory overwhelm

If this sounds familiar, your child may be experiencing brain imbalance—and that often shows up as ADHD behaviors, sensory struggles, or social difficulties.

The Good News: The Brain Can Change

The brain is like a muscle—it can grow stronger with the right input. The right brain thrives on movement, rhythm, balance, creativity, and connection. Some of the best ways to support it include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments → Help “wake up” the nervous system so signals travel more clearly.

  • Cross-body movement → Crawling patterns, balance games, or playing catch where both sides of the brain must work together.

  • Sensory play → Swinging, spinning, trampolines, or rhythmic music.

  • Eye exercises → Tracking games (like following a flashlight) or tossing a ball back and forth.

  • Creative play → Drawing, building, pretend play, or music.

How Balance Helps the Whole Brain

When the right brain gets stronger, the left brain benefits too. Think of it like a relay race: a strong right side passes the baton smoothly, which allows the left side (language, logic, academics) to shine. Balanced teamwork between the two sides of the brain is what leads to better focus, emotional regulation, and learning.

Here’s another way to picture it: the brain works a lot like Wi-Fi. The right brain is the router—it sets the signal and makes sure information flows. The frontal lobe (the part responsible for focus, impulse control, and planning) is like the device using the internet.

If the router’s signal is weak, the device struggles to connect, no matter how new or powerful it is. In the same way, if the right brain isn’t strong, the frontal lobe has a hard time doing its job. Strengthening the right (and left) sides of the brain is like boosting the Wi-Fi signal—suddenly everything connects better. That’s when kids experience calmer emotions, sharper focus, and better self-control.

The Big Picture

Supporting your child’s brain isn’t about “fixing” them. It’s about helping their brain work the way it was designed to. When both sides are balanced, kids feel more comfortable in their bodies, more at peace emotionally, and more capable in school and relationships.

At Apex Chiropractic, we love helping families understand that brain balance is possible—and that with the right support, kids can thrive not just in how they think, but in how they feel and connect with the world around them.
